    "question": "How does CarbonixQuest work day to day?",
    "answer": "Every day at midnight UTC, 5 new rounds are generated: 3 sorting rounds and 2 estimates, played alternately (sort, estimate, sort, estimate, sort). The challenge is identical for every player worldwide — there's no personalized version, everyone gets the same items the same day."

    "question": "How does a round work?",
    "answer": "You drag and drop 5 cards — food, drinks, travel, objects, digital uses or everyday situations — to sort them from the lowest to the highest carbon footprint. Once your ranking is submitted, the cards in the right position are highlighted; when everything is in order, the real values are revealed."

    "question": "What are the 5 daily rounds?",
    "answer": "The rounds alternate: sorting, estimate, sorting, estimate, sorting. Each sorting round has its own theme: Objects (all counted per item), Food (all per kilo, always mixing plant and non-plant foods) and Mix (cards from the whole dataset, any category — mind the quantity on each card, as units differ). The 2 estimates show two cards, and you guess how many times the first one it takes to match the carbon footprint of the second. An item never appears in two rounds on the same day, and the two estimates never pair the same kinds of items. Each round has its own star score."

    "question": "How do the estimate rounds work?",
    "answer": "Move the slider to the multiplier you think is right (from ×1 to ×1000), then lock it in — you only get one try. The real ratio is then revealed with both values. Stars depend on how close you are: 5 stars within ×2 of the real ratio, 4 within ×3, 3 within ×5, 2 within ×10, and 1 star beyond."

    "question": "Why do the cards show different quantities (1 kg, 1 km, 1 L)?",
    "answer": "Each value is shown in the unit in which it is published: food per kg, drinks per litre, travel per km, objects per item. The quantity is written on each card, so always compare the card as stated — 1 kg of beef against 1 jean, for instance."

    "question": "How many stars can I earn?",
    "answer": "Each sorting round starts at 5 stars. Every wrong submission costs one star, down to a minimum of 1 star once you find the right order. The estimate rounds score from 1 to 5 stars depending on your accuracy."

    "question": "How does a duel work?",
    "answer": "Create your duel from the Duels page or the home screen: you get 5 new rounds, different from the daily. Play them first, then send the link to your friends. Anyone with the link can play the same rounds once, without an account, for 24 hours. Then the final ranking stays visible to everyone with the link for 30 days."

  {
    "id": "score-calculation",
    "category": "scoring",
    "question": "How is my overall score calculated?",
    "answer": "Each round earns points based on the number of stars you got (10 points per star), with a bonus that grows by 2% per day of your current streak, capped at +25% for long streaks, plus a fixed 5-point bonus if you score a perfect 5 stars. For example, 5 stars with a 10-day streak earns 50 × 1.20 + 5 = 65 points. This score feeds into the weekly and monthly leaderboards."

  },
  {
    "id": "trophies",

    "question": "What are trophies?",
    "answer": "Rewards unlocked by reaching certain milestones — a day streak, an XP level, sharing a result, joining a League. Visible in the \"Achievements\" section of your profile, with progress toward each tier, independent of the weekly and monthly leaderboards."
  },
  {
    "id": "percentile",
    "category": "scoring",
    "question": "How do I compare to other players today?",
    "answer": "After a round, a percentile shows where you stand compared to other players who scored the same number of stars that day on that variant — a community benchmark, not just an isolated score."
  },
  {
    "id": "leaderboard",
    "category": "scoring",
    "question": "How do the weekly and monthly leaderboards work?",
    "answer": "The leaderboard adds up your score from every round played during the current week or month, and resets at the start of each new period. Top players from each period are rewarded automatically."
  },
  {
    "id": "leagues",
    "category": "scoring",
    "question": "What is a League?",
    "answer": "A League is a smaller-scope leaderboard: you create or join a private group via an invite code, and only that group's members show up in that particular ranking. The scoring itself is identical to the main leaderboard."
  },
  {
    "id": "duel-counts",
    "category": "scoring",
    "question": "Does a duel count toward my streak or the leaderboard?",
    "answer": "No. A duel only counts for its own ranking: it doesn't affect your streak, XP, or the weekly and monthly leaderboards. It does have its own achievements on your profile: Duelist (duels you created and played) and Challenge accepted (duels from other players you finished)."

    "id": "what-is-carbon-footprint",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "What is a carbon footprint?",
    "answer": "It's the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted because of a product, a trip or an activity, across its whole life cycle: producing the raw materials, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life. It is expressed in kg of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), so that very different things — a kilo of beef, a pair of jeans, a kilometer by train — can be compared on the same scale."
  },
  {
    "id": "link-global-warming",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "How is it linked to global warming?",
    "answer": "Greenhouse gases trap part of the heat radiated by the Earth. By emitting large amounts of them, mainly through burning fossil fuels, agriculture and deforestation, human activities increase this effect. According to the IPCC (the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), this has unequivocally warmed the planet, by about 1.1 °C over 2011-2020 compared with 1850-1900. The carbon footprint measures how much a given product or activity contributes to these emissions."
  },
  {
    "id": "data-source",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "Where do the carbon footprint figures come from?",
    "answer": "All values come from Impact CO2, a public tool published by ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition), reused under the Licence Ouverte 2.0 (Etalab open licence). Impact CO2 itself relies on other public ADEME datasets: Agribalyse 3.2 (updated January 15, 2025) for food and drinks, and the Base Empreinte for transport and digital usage, as well as for objects (clothing, devices, appliances, furniture) together with dedicated ADEME studies. A few real-life scenarios (a ski day, a hotel night, a TV series) are composite estimates calculated by Impact CO2. The figures were extracted from Impact CO2 on October 1, 2026 and are shown as published, without adjustment. The same source applies to every round: sorting and estimate rounds draw from the same pool of items."
  },
  {
    "id": "why-french-data",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "Why use French data?",
    "answer": "Because ADEME publishes, as open data, one of the most complete public databases on everyday food, objects, travel and habits, all calculated with a consistent method. Mixing databases from several countries was ruled out: for the same food, figures can differ by a factor of 2 to 3.5 from one database to another, which would make comparing cards meaningless."
  },
  {
    "id": "french-values",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "Are these values valid outside France?",
    "answer": "As orders of magnitude, mostly yes, with one main limit: the figures are calculated for France, where electricity is very low-carbon (mostly nuclear and renewables). Anything that uses electricity — digital usage, appliances, electric trains — can have a noticeably higher footprint in a country with a more carbon-intensive electricity mix. No correction is applied in the game: these items keep their French value, like all the others."
  },
  {
    "id": "precision",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "How precise are the figures?",
    "answer": "They are average values for a typical product or trip, not measurements of one specific item: the actual footprint varies with how and where something is produced, the season, or how full a vehicle is. Read them as orders of magnitude rather than exact decimals. That's also why sorting rounds never place two cards closer than a factor of 1.25, and why estimate rounds score how close your ratio is rather than an exact answer."
  },
  {
    "id": "what-is-co2e",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "What does \"CO2e\" mean?",
    "answer": "CO2 equivalent: a common unit that adds up all greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide...) by converting each one into the amount of CO2 that would have the same warming effect. A footprint of 10 kg CO2e has the same impact on the climate as emitting 10 kg of CO2."
  },
  {
    "id": "ademe-affiliation",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "Is the game affiliated with ADEME?",
    "answer": "No. CarbonixQuest is an independent project that reuses ADEME's public data under the Licence Ouverte 2.0. ADEME has not reviewed, approved or endorsed the game, and any mistake in how the data is used here is mine."
  },
  {
    "id": "daily-selection",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "How is each day's challenge selected?",
    "answer": "Selection is computed server-side from the current date: the same calculation produces the same result for everyone. The front-end never computes or stores any game data itself — everything comes from the server the moment you open the round."
  },
  {
    "id": "report-error",

  },
  {
    "id": "ai-images",
    "category": "data",
    "question": "Do you use AI-generated images?",
    "answer": "No — it's a strict project policy: no visual (background, illustration, icon) is AI-generated. Unless I got fooled without realizing it, in which case please flag it via the support form and I'll swap it out as soon as possible."

  {
    "id": "account-required",
    "category": "account",
    "question": "Do I need to create an account to play?",
    "answer": "No. At the end of your first game, a nickname is generated automatically and an identifier is stored locally on your device — no sign-up, no password. You can later customize your nickname from your profile if you'd like."
  },
  {
    "id": "account-difference",
    "category": "account",
    "question": "What's the difference between playing without an account and creating one?",
    "answer": "Without creating anything, an anonymous identifier is enough to play and save your scores from your very first game. Creating a real account (email and password) additionally unlocks extended stats on your profile — two distinct levels, not just a formality."
  },
  {
    "id": "cross-device",
    "category": "account",
    "question": "Can I get my progress on another device?",
    "answer": "If you play without an account, your progress is stored only on the device you're using — there is currently no way to transfer it manually to another device or browser. To access your progress everywhere, create an account (email and password): syncing then becomes automatic."
